Uralla

Uralla is a prosperous rural service town surrounded by the rich, fertile soils of the New England district. Its prosperity is linked to its proximity to Armidale, and many workers undertake the 23 kilometer commute daily, many to work or study at Armidale’s University of New England.

Uralla is known for the superfine wool and cattle produced on the surrounding properties and it is a popular destination – it is almost exactly halfway between Sydney and Brisbane. Uralla describes itself as ‘Thunderbolt Country’ demonstrated by one of the town’s claims to fame – the bushranger Captain Thunderbolt; his body lies in the local cemetery; he has a statue in the main street and Thunderbolt Rock, the place which he reputedly used for many of his robberies, lies only 7 km south of the town.

Uralla is the traditional home of the Anaiwan people and it is believed that “Uralla” was the name given to the Uralla hill or the two hills at the town’s north-western boundary which were a ceremonial meeting place.

Uralla is proud if its colonial gold rush history and indigenous heritage alongside fabulous artisanal food and boutique wineries and breweries. Uralla is considered the area’s foodie capital.
Along with its farming, grazing, food and wine and academe, Uralla has a wide range of support industries and an extremely healthy retail sector. The town offers an antiquarian bookshop, antique stores, art galleries and specialty stores. Cool-climate wineries, artisan breweries, a boutique cidery and an award-winning distillery are all local employers.

Armidale Family Day Care has supported the establishment of 24 Educators’ services since 1983, giving local and relocating early childhood professionals home based career opportunities that would not have otherwise been available to them and supporting their work in providing high quality child care to the children of local families. While only one Uralla Educator is currently providing child care, we are actively recruiting additional Educators to provide quality, affordable, child care to the families who live and work in the Uralla region.

As is the case in other centres in which Armidale Family Day Care operates, our Armidale Family Day Care Educators’ home based environment provide the families using care with the opportunity to place non-school aged children and school aged children together in the same child care environment.
